Structure Fire

Olympia Firefighters responded to fire alarm activation at Heritage Park Apartment, 1818 Evergreen Park Drive at 10:56 pm on Saturday night.  Two minutes after the automatic fire alarm notified the fire department, callers to 9-1-1 reported a fire with a person inside.  The fire department arrived as the manager and a neighbor broke open the door, spayed a fire extinguisher inside and pulled out the single occupant.  Firefighters attended to the patient and entered the room to extinguish the rest of the fire.

Firefighters in the room reported what appeared to be a stove top fire that spread to the cabinets, walls and ceiling.  The fire was quickly extinguished and the area explored to make sure there was no more fire.  Several electrical conduits were found to be burning and extinguished after the wall and ceiling were opened.  The kitchen was damaged by the fire and the remainder of the unit was heavily damaged by smoke.  One adjoining apartment was also damaged by smoke and had to have wall and ceiling removed to access the electrical conduit that was on fire.

A single male patient was taken to Providence St. Peter hospital.  He suffered from smoke inhalation but was expected to recover.

Olympia Fire Investigators noted that the automatic fire alarm gave the firefighters a 3 minute head start on the calls to 9-1-1 by neighbors and contributed greatly to the fast response and the neighbors knowing that there was a fire before it was too late.

Olympia Fire Department responded with 4 engines, 1 ladder truck, 2 medic units, and a command unit.  Additional units form Lacey Fire District 3 also responded. There were no injuries to firefighters or the manager and neighbor that rescued the resident.

Fire and smoke damage to the initial unit and another unit with a common wall was estimated at $20,000.  The American Red Cross was contacted to assist one family.  The cause of the fire is under investigation.
